To our community members and friends of Nepal,
The Nepal Cultural Society of British Columbia (NCSBC) is profoundly heartbroken by the catastrophic flash floods that struck the Himalayan border between Nepal and China earlier this week. The devastating loss of life, the destruction of villages and vital infrastructure, and the ongoing search for thousands of missing individuals—including members of our own Canadian-Nepali community—have left us deeply sorrowful.
In the face of this unprecedented disaster, we want to express our most sincere gratitude to the Government of Canada for stepping forward with a commitment of $5 million in urgent humanitarian aid to support emergency relief efforts. We sincerely thank Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Secretary of State for International Development Randeep Sarai for their rapid response and solidarity during this critical time.
This vital Canadian contribution will be directed to organizations on the ground, such as the Red Cross, to deliver life-saving assistance, including essential supplies, shelter, and medical support to the hardest-hit regions. Furthermore, the deployment of Canadian consular officials to Kathmandu to assist affected Canadians and coordinate with local authorities provides a profound sense of comfort to the diaspora in British Columbia.
As the search and rescue operations continue in the difficult terrain, our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims, their grieving families, and the courageous rescue workers working tirelessly through the mud and debris. We also stand in solidarity with the families of the 32 missing Canadians who are anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones.
How You Can Help
We encourage our NCSBC community and all British Columbians to continue supporting the relief efforts. Contributions can be made to recognized humanitarian organizations, such as the Canadian Red Cross, who are actively working on the ground to provide immediate aid.
We will continue to keep the community updated as we monitor the situation closely.
In solidarity,
Nepal Cultural Society of British Columbia (NCSBC)
On behalf of the NCSBC Board of Directors
